Tips to Manage Home Utilities in a Hurricane

Riverview Pool and Electrical Contractors Serving Tampa

Preparing for an approaching hurricane is important for your safety, the safety or your family, and the safety of your home. Besides the usual preparations of stockpiling food, water, and flashlight batteries, you need to know how to best manage your home’s utilities before, during, and after a storm. Here are some guidelines that should help with that task.

Electricity

Learn where and how to shut off your home’s electricity. If flooding is expected in your area, you’ll need to unplug your appliances and shut off your home’s power at the circuit breaker box. If there’s standing water by the circuit box, don’t attempt to access it, but contact your electrical provider to shut off the power at the meter. If you or any family member requires electricity to power a medical device, you should contact your health provider to devise an emergency plan.

If you encounter a downed power line, call 911 immediately to report it.

Natural Gas

Do not attempt to turn off your gas at the meter. Rather, shut off the valves that are servicing any gas appliances you might have, such as the stove, furnace, or water heater. When you return to your home, be aware of any odd smells, as there may be a gas leak. If you suspect a gas leak, open the windows, leave the home, and contact your gas company.

Water

Your water service may be interrupted, or the water may become contaminated as a result of the storm. You should stockpile bottled water and have at least a 3-5 day supply on hand. A rule of thumb is to have one gallon per day for each family member or pet. It’s a good idea to fill the bathtubs and use buckets of water to flush toilets if the water is shut off. Since it’s usually pouring for days before and after the storm, you can also collect rain water for flushing.

Above all, follow any instructions you received from your local authorities and be prepared.
