If your air conditioner seems to run all day but your home still feels damp or muggy, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common concerns homeowners have during the Florida summer, especially throughout Tampa, St. Petersburg, Brandon, and surrounding communities.
According to Jarrod Falk, HVAC Department Manager at Hawkins Service Co., homeowners often assume their air conditioner isn’t cooling properly when the real issue is excess humidity inside the home.
“The thermostat may read 75 degrees, but if the humidity is high, the house still won’t feel comfortable,” Jarrod explains. “In many cases, the system is producing cold air, but it isn’t removing enough moisture from the indoor air.”
Understanding why humidity builds up can help homeowners identify the real problem before it leads to higher energy bills or unnecessary equipment replacement.
Why Humidity Matters as Much as Temperature
Florida’s climate is unlike most of the country. While the temperature certainly plays a role in indoor comfort, humidity often has an even greater impact on how a home feels.
Air conditioners are designed to do two jobs: cool the air and remove moisture. When either of those functions is compromised, homeowners may notice rooms feeling sticky or clammy even though the thermostat shows the desired temperature.
High indoor humidity can also make the air feel warmer than it actually is, causing the AC to run longer and increasing energy consumption.
Common Reasons Your Home Still Feels Muggy
According to Jarrod, several issues can prevent an air conditioner from properly controlling humidity.
Restricted Airflow
Dirty air filters, clogged evaporator coils, or blocked ductwork can reduce airflow throughout the system. When airflow is restricted, the air conditioner becomes less effective at both cooling and dehumidifying the home.
Refrigerant Problems
Low refrigerant levels reduce the system’s ability to absorb heat and moisture from the indoor air. Homeowners may notice longer cooling cycles, warmer supply air, or increased humidity.
Leaky Ductwork
One of the most overlooked causes of indoor humidity is leaking ductwork.
“If return ducts have leaks in the attic or garage, the system can pull hot, humid air into the ductwork before it reaches the air handler,” Jarrod says. “Instead of conditioning the air already inside the home, the system ends up fighting against outside humidity.”
Leaky ducts can make even a newer air conditioner struggle to keep the home comfortable.
Bigger Isn’t Always Better
Many homeowners assume installing a larger air conditioner will cool the home faster and solve humidity issues.
According to Jarrod, the opposite is often true.
An oversized air conditioner cools the home very quickly, satisfying the thermostat before it has enough time to remove moisture from the air. The system then shuts off, leaving humidity behind.
The result is a house that feels cold but still damp.
Early in his career in Florida, Jarrod inspected a home where the windows were covered with condensation during the middle of the day. Inside, the home felt cool, but the air was heavy and uncomfortable.
After evaluating the equipment, he discovered the previous contractor had installed a 5-ton system when the home only required approximately 3.5 tons of cooling capacity.
Once the properly sized system was installed, the humidity issues disappeared.
Proper HVAC Sizing Makes a Difference
Choosing the right air conditioner involves much more than selecting a brand or the largest available unit. A professional HVAC contractor should perform a load calculation that considers the home’s square footage, insulation, window placement, ceiling height, and other factors before recommending equipment.
A properly sized system runs long enough to remove both heat and moisture while maintaining consistent indoor comfort.
An undersized system may remove humidity effectively because it runs continuously, but it will struggle to cool the home during Florida’s hottest weather.
An oversized system may cool quickly but leave the home feeling damp because it doesn’t run long enough to complete the dehumidification process. Finding the right balance is key to comfort and efficiency.
Excess Humidity Can Affect More Than Comfort
Indoor humidity doesn’t just make a home feel uncomfortable. Over time, it can also contribute to additional problems.
According to Jarrod, excess moisture creates favorable conditions for mold and mildew growth on evaporator coils and blower components. As buildup develops inside the system, airflow becomes restricted, causing the equipment to work even harder.
That added strain can shorten the lifespan of important components such as blower motors and compressors while also affecting indoor air quality.
Addressing humidity problems early can help improve system performance and reduce the likelihood of more expensive AC repairs later.
When to Schedule an HVAC Inspection
If your air conditioner runs constantly but your home still feels humid, it’s worth having the system inspected before assuming replacement is necessary.
